University Police -- Timely Warning Policy & Archive

The campus crime alert is designed to give students, faculty, and staff timely notification of a crime that constitutes a danger to the University of Toledo community. Such information is a valuable tool in heightening safety awareness and obtaining information which may lead to an arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

The University of Toledo issues a campus crime alert when a crime is reported to the University of Toledo Police Department or the City of Toledo Police Department and it is determined that such offense represents a threat to the safety of the University of Toledo community. Every attempt is made to distribute the alert within 48 hours of the time the incident is reported; however, the release of the crime alert is subject to the availability of facts concerning the incident. The decision to issue a crime alert shall be decided on a case by case basis in light of all the facts surrounding a crime, including factors such as the nature of the crime, the continuing danger to the campus community, and the possible risk of compromising law enforcement efforts.

An alert is distributed by email and can be found at www.police.utoledo.edu. In certain circumstances, a bulletin will also be distributed around the campus area on bulletin boards. The following is an archive of recent timely warnings issued by University Police.

The University of Toledo Police Department received information yesterday of two alleged incidents of sexual assault. The incidents are not related. On October 4, 2007 an alleged sexual assault occurred in a residence in Greek Village by a known assailant. Also, Toledo Police responded to an off-campus report of sexual assault in the Secor Gardens neighborhood. The perpetrator was a known assailant and an arrest was made in the case. • Most perpetrators choose a victim they know.

  • Sexual assault includes sexual activity with someone whose judgment is substantially impaired by alcohol or drugs, whether ingested voluntarily or unknowingly.

In light of these events, UT Police would like to encourage all members of the campus community to review the following tips that can help lessen your chances of being a victim of crime:

  • Walking to and from class, or other destinations: Do not walk alone. Use the buddy system. Stay in well lit areas as much as possible. Look aware and be aware of your surroundings; having headphones on or chatting on a cell phone may give the appearance you are less aware. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. Robbers look for people who appear to have lots of cash. Keep cash in small amounts in different pockets.

  • In your apartment or home: Keep your doors and windows locked and do not open them to strangers. Watch for anyone who may have followed you home. Keep your front entrance well lit and visible from inside your house.

  • When traveling in your car: Keep your doors locked, windows rolled up, and your car in gear. If your car is approached while you are stopped, try to safely drive away. Be aware whether you are being followed. If you are being followed, drive to a well lit public area and ask for help.

Most importantly, be a responsible member of the community. If you see someone suspicious, or have information on this or any other crime, please report it to the police.

Timely Warning: UPDATE – NASH HALL SUSPECT ARRESTED

Monday, September 10, 2007

UT Police today arrested an individual in connection with several incidents at Nash Hall last week. Jeremy Ketter, 25, was arrested at his north Toledo home and charged with two counts of burglary and one count of sexual imposition. He was booked in the Lucas County Jail.

Ketter is believed to be the individual who entered no less than four unlocked dorm rooms in Nash Hall while the occupants were asleep during the wee hours of Thursday morning, Sept. 6, 2007. In three instances the occupants awoke to an unknown male touching their body. In the fourth instance the residents awoke to an unknown male standing in their room talking to them.

All four incidents occurred between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Based upon descriptions provided by the victims, it appears it was the same individual in all four instances.

The early morning incidents were not reported to police until late Thursday night, when the suspect was seen lurking in the ladies shower in Nash Hall. He was chased out of the building by residents, who then called UT Police to report what had just occurred and what had happened 14 hours earlier.

Ketter was scheduled to appear in Toledo Municipal court this afternoon for sentencing on a July burglary conviction stemming from a pair of incidents in the Crossings residence hall last March. In both instances Ketter entered a dorm room while the occupants were asleep and touched their bodies.

“While the campus community can take comfort an arrest has been made, people still need to be vigilant,” UT Police Chief Jeff Newton said. “Lock your doors and lock up your valuables. Get to know the people who live on your floor and do not hesitate to report suspicious people.”

“Campus safety should be a campus-wide effort,” Newton said. “Everyone should do their part. Don’t leave doors propped open and don’t open unlocked doors for people you don’t know. We can keep UT safe by working together.”

Timely Warning: Intruder in Nash Hall, Off-Campus Robbery

Friday, September 7, 2007

The University of Toledo Police would like to educate and inform the community of two recent incidents affecting safety.

The University of Toledo Police recently received reports of an unidentified male entering no less than four unlocked dorms rooms in Nash Hall while the occupants were asleep during the wee hours of Thursday morning.

He is described as a black male, 20 to 22 years old, height of 5’5 to 5’7, stocky or heavy set, with a jaw strap facial hair, wearing blue jeans, a white hat, and a white polo-style shirt with hunter green stripes. According to the witnesses, the individual appeared to be intoxicated.

The early morning incidents were not reported to police until late Thursday night, when the suspect was seen lurking in the ladies shower in Nash Hall. He was chased out of the building by residents, who then called UT Police to report what had just occurred and what had happened 14 hours earlier.  UTPD is following possible leads in the case.

The University of Toledo Police department and the Office of Residence Life strongly urge students to keep the doors to their rooms locked at all times.  Please contact UTPD immediately when suspicious activity is witnessed.

“This incident clearly underscores the need to keep doors locked, especially at night,” UT Police Chief Jeff Newton said. “We also want to encourage the campus community as a whole to report suspicious events and people right away.”

The University of Toledo Police has also recently learned of an armed robbery which occurred near campus at 2520 Dorr Street.  The two male victims were leaving Jake’s Bar when the suspect, described as a black male, 6’ tall, 175 to 190 lbs., produced a revolver and robbed the victims of cash and a cell phone.
