Residence Hall advisers and
student security aides receive training provided by UT
police on safety procedures and the enforcement of
University regulations. Our officers on a regular basis
conduct security audits.
The majority of crimes in the residence
halls involve the theft of personal property. Most
thefts do not involve forced entry but are crimes of
opportunity. Here are some useful safety tips that may
save you from falling victim to crime:
-
Do not prop open locked residence hall
doors.
-
Lock your door when sleeping or
leaving your room.
-
Do not walk alone after dark. Use the
Escort Service (Night Watch)
-
Attend police safety presentations.
-
Stay alert, be aware of what’s around
you.
-
Know where the emergency phones are
located.
-
Do not allow door-to-door sales people
to enter your room.
-
Request identification and
authorization from maintenance staff requesting to
remove furniture or to make repairs in your room.
-
Report suspicious persons loitering or
checking doors in your hall to UTPD immediately.
-
Do not bring expensive jewelry to
campus.
-
Engrave all valuable items (TV/DVD,
gaming systems, etc.) with a PIN number and keep a
record of their description and serial numbers.
Engravers are available in the residence halls and at
the police station.
-
Mark all clothing with laundry pencil
or needle and thread in a place other than the label.
-
Bicycles should be properly locked to
a bike rack, using a solid steel U-shaped lock.
-
Automobiles should be locked at all
times.
-
Never leave items unattended in the
library, Student Union, classrooms, offices, restrooms
or elsewhere.
-
Park and walk in well-lighted areas.
-
Report a theft immediately to the
University police department.
