University Police -- Police Officer
All University Law Enforcement Officers
(both police officers and sergeants) are represented by
the
University of Toledo Police Patrolman's Association
(UTPPA), which is a member of the
International Union of Police Associations (IUPA).
The University of Toledo has worked
diligently to assemble a wage and benefits package
designed to attract the best and the brightest of
applicants.
Wages
Starting pay for a University Law
Enforcement Officer (ULEO) is $17.47 per hour
($36,337.60 annually) for people who are not certified
Ohio Peace Officers. They are paid this rate while they
are in the police academy. Starting pay for applicants who have
completed the academy is $18.80 per hour ($39,104
annually).
The current agreement between the
University and the University of Toledo Police
Patrolman’s Association (UTPPA) – the union that
represents all officers and sergeants – includes annual
step increases, as well as shift differential. The top rate of pay for a police
officer, bargaining unit classifications ULEO 1 and ULEO
2, is $22.36 ($46,508.80 annually).
Officers who meet the following criteria
may be considered for the classification of Senior ULEO
2, which has a pay scale ranging from $23.85 ($49,608
annually) to $24.50 ($50,960 annually):

4 years of service with the department

a bachelor’s degree
-
above average evaluations
-
no disciplinary record
-
no sick leave abuse
-
self-improvement training
Sergeants, or ULEO 3s, have a pay scale
from $24.87 ($51,729.60 annually) to $25.97 ($54,017.60
annually).
Shift Differential
The wages listed above are based on an
officer working first shift (days). Shift differential
based upon shift assignments adds an additional $.35 per
hour ($728 annually) for officers on second shift
(afternoons), $.15 per hour ($312 annually) for those on
third shift (midnights), or $.25 per hour ($520
annually) for those on swing shift (overlapping
afternoons and midnights).
Benefits
UTPPA members are part of the Ohio
Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), for Law
Enforcement Officers. As part of this plan, they may
retire at age 52 (or later), if they have completed at
least 25 years of service in PERS-LE. The employee’s
contribution is 9% of each paycheck. The University
contributes 16.7% The University also provides, at no
cost, a group term life and accidental death and
dismemberment policy. The coverage for UTPPA members is
2.045 times base annual salary.
The University also provides an
extensive health care benefits package, which includes
medical visits, prescription drugs, dental care, and a
vision plan. In addition to retirement, life insurance,
and health care benefits, UTPPA members, their spouses,
and dependents, may also take advantage of the various
tuition benefits offered by the University. They include
everything from partial to free tuition for
undergraduate, graduate, or continuing education
coursework.
Requirements
Applicants for the position of
University Law Enforcement Officer for the University of
Toledo must:

Be at least 21 years old
-
Possess a valid driver’s license
-
Have completed 86 quarter/64 semester
hours of college level academic credits from an
accredited university or college, having earned a GPA
of 2.0 or higher -- OR -- must have at least 5 years
continuous active full-time law enforcement experience
with a certified law enforcement agency
Applicants that meet these requirements
will then be invited to take the civil service test.
People who pass the test will be allowed to continue in
the process. They will be required to pass a physical
agility test.
Candidates who pass the physical fitness
test will then undergo a background investigation and a
polygraph test. Applicants who are not eliminated in
this phase of the process will be invited to participate
in an assessment center.
The day-long assessment center includes
a variety of written and oral exercises and role-playing
scenarios. Successful applicants will then be invited
back for an interview by a committee whose membership
represents the University community.
Based upon the results of the assessment
center, the committee’s recommendations, and a
one-on-one interview with the chief, a conditional offer
of employment will be extended to successful applicants.
Candidates who accept the conditional
offer of employment must then undergo and pass both a
psychological exam and urinalysis test.

transcripts. For applicants substituting five (5) years
of full-time active, continuous law enforcement service
in place of the education requirement, written
documentation of proof of employment must be provided by
their employer(s)

their OPOTC certification, written documentation of

academy/school and must accompany your cover letter and
