University Police -- 2003 K-9 Unit Activity Log

In 2003, the UT Police K-9 Unit responded to the following situations:

2/11/03 – Assist the Perrysburg City Police Department – Bomb threat 
Perrysburg High School received repeated phone calls indicating there was a bomb in the building. UTPD K-9 was utilized to sweep the school. No explosives were found.

2/16/03 – Assist the FBI – Suspicious circumstances 
The Northwest Ohio Joint Terrorism Task Force received information of a possible threat to the Stranahan Theatre & Great Hall / Masonic Auditorium complex in Toledo. UTPD K-9, along with the Toledo Police Department Bomb Squad, made a sweep of the facility. No explosives or suspicious devices were located.

2/19/03 – Assist the Perrysburg City Police Department – Bomb threat 
Perrysburg High School received several phone calls indicating there was a bomb in the building. UTPD K-9 was utilized to sweep the school. No explosives were found.

3/6/03 – University of Toledo Nitschke Hall – Suspicious package
Basket left unattended. K-9 utilized to check the package and sweep the area. No explosives found, subsequent search of the basket determined no threat existed.

3/17/03 – University of Toledo Doermann Theater – VIP Lecture
Pre-event sweep and patrol of theater where U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was scheduled to speak.

5/10/03 – University of Toledo Savage Hall – Spring Commencement
Assisted the U.S. Secret Service protection detail for Treasury Secretary John Snow. Conducted a pre-event sweep and patrol both inside and outside the building.

6/23/03 through 6/29/03 – US Senior Open, Inverness Club 
Performed daily sweeps of the grounds and club house and patrolled the facility throughout the course of the event.

7/9/03 – Assist the Toledo Police Department – Tracking Escaped Felon 
A man arrested for robbing a south Toledo eatery kicked out the window of the patrol car that was transporting him to Police Headquarters, and escaped. He dove out the broken window while the car was in motion and assaulted a police officer before disappearing into a central city neighborhood. The UTPD K-9 unit was requested, and tracked the man over 6 blocks – through backyards and alleyways – to a private residence where he was re-arrested. 

8/15/03 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

8/18/03 – VIP Protection Detail, SeaGate Centre
Pre-event sweep and patrol of facility where the 32nd Annual National Conference of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States was held.

8/28/03 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

9/6/03 – University of Toledo Glass Bowl – UT Football home game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

9/7/03 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

9/12/03 – Assist the U.S. Secret Service – Presidential visit
Performed explosives sweep of the area where the President's helicopter, Marine 1, was staged during his visit to Monroe, Michigan.

9/28/03 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

10/11/03 – University of Toledo Glass Bowl – UT Football home game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

10/12/03 – Cleveland Browns Home Game

10/25/03 – Bowling Green State University, Doyt Perry Field – BGSU football game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

11/1/03 – University of Toledo Glass Bowl – UT Football home game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

11/14/03 – Assist the Toledo Police Department – Tracking Felony Theft Suspect
A man wanted by Ottawa Hills Police for robbery and grand theft auto was seen by Toledo Police attempting to steal a boat on a trailer in west Toledo. Toledo Police gave chase, and apprehended one suspect. The other managed to elude officers and the UTPD K-9 unit was summoned. Boomer tracked the suspect's scent for over a mile before losing it on a side street where the suspect possibly got into a waiting vehicle.
