University Police -- 2002 K-9 Unit Activity Log

In 2002, the UT Police K-9 Unit responded to the following situations:

8/29/02 – University of Toledo Law Center – Suspicious Package
Book bag left unattended. K-9 utilized to sweep package. No explosives found, book bag removed.

8/29/02 – University of Toledo Glass Bowl – UT Football home game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

8/30/02 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

9/4/02 – Assist the Maumee Police Division – Bomb threat
The manager of the local Meijer store received a phone call announcing building would be blown up. A sweep of area produced no packages or explosives.

9/6/02 – University of Toledo Student Union – Suspicious package
Backpack left unattended. K-9 utilized to sweep package. No explosives found, backpack removed.

9/8/02 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

9/11/02 – 5/3 Field, Toledo – 9/11 memorial
Pre-event sweep and patrol.

9/15/02 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

9/21/02 – University of Toledo Glass Bowl – UT Football Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

10/2/02 – Assist the ATF/FBI – Suspicious circumstances
An armed man was stopped at the gate to the Davis Besse Nuclear Power Plant with possible explosives in vehicle. Davis Besse Security equipment picked up possible dynamite readings on an electronic measuring device. UTPD K-9 utilized to sweep vehicle to narrow down area of explosives for Bomb Squad technicians to locate and disarm if needed. K-9 Boomer positively indicated on rear of vehicle where a film canister containing Nitro-Glycerin pills was later found inside a duffel bag.

10/20/02 – Cleveland Browns Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

10/26/02 – University of Toledo Glass Bowl – UT Football Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

11/9/02 – University of Toledo Glass Bowl – UT Football Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

11/13/02 – University of Toledo Savage Hall – UT Basketball Home Game
Pre-game sweep and patrol.

11/16/02 – Assist the Oregon Police Department – Tracking suspect
A cross bow hunter was hiding in a cornfield, eluding authorities. UTPD K-9 was utilized to track suspect who was evading police officers and refused to come out after being ordered to do so. K-9 flushed suspect out of the corn and towards waiting officers.

11/26/02 – Assist the Perrysburg Township Police Department – Bomb scare
Man called police about package left in his yard. The man had received death threats in past and was afraid that the package was a bomb. UTPD K-9 was utilized to sweep other areas and near package to assist bomb squad. K-9 did not indicate on package and it was later determined that the package was not a bomb.
